Electric Toothbrush: Should You Make the Switch?

Are you relying on a manual toothbrush to clean your teeth each day? While there is no “right or wrong” type of toothbrush, there are some significant advantages to be gained if you upgrade to an electric version. Despite the larger upfront investment, electric (or powered) toothbrushes can not only be more effective but easier to use as well. In fact, they are ideal for aging adults and young children who lack dexterity and coordination.

The Benefits of ‘Powering Up’ Your Brushing Game

An electric toothbrush uses pulsating vibrations to loosen plaque and food debris from the teeth and gums. The Cochrane Oral Health Group conducted a research study that showed that an electric toothbrush reduced plaque by 11% after just 1-3 months of use and by 21% after 3 months! We know plaque is the leading contributor to gum disease and decay, so these stats are noteworthy in terms of keeping a healthy mouth.

The main difference between electric and manual toothbrushes comes down to brush strokes per minute. With a manual version, you are likely to make about 300 strokes per minute. However, with the average electric toothbrush, you can expect nearly 5,000 strokes going across your pearly whites in the same one minute timespan. This makes powered toothbrushes incredibly more efficient – but we still recommend sticking with your brushing task the full two minutes each session.

Your gums will also thank you for using an electric toothbrush. Not only do they do a better job at removing the plaque that causes gum disease, but they also give the gums a gentle massage to stimulate health and blood flow. Keep in mind that when you take steps (like using an electric toothbrush) to prevent gum disease, you are also protecting your whole-body health. Periodontal disease has been linked to severe health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, miscarriage, low birth weight babies and stroke.

When it comes to your oral care regime at home, our dentists want to help. At Smile Design Studio, we are happy to go over the best toothpaste, floss and toothbrushes to use as it pertains to your unique dental needs. The extra money you’ll spend on an electric toothbrush, however, could be far outweighed by the cost of oral health problems associated with the poor cleaning habits of a manual toothbrush. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned brusher, consider the powerful benefits of going electric with your toothbrush!
